In the GorillaGarden, you can view the largest living primates in action in their sprawling outdoor enclosure. The diverse landscape with hills, a brook, artificial termite mound and herb meadow allows the animals to live to the fullest. The terrain rises slightly, giving visitors a good view of what is happening from the large platform. The adjacent GorillaVilla with its large panoramic windows offers exciting views as well.
There currently are two lowland gorilla groups living at the Krefeld zoo, though they never meet. The Great Ape House is the home of the 'seniors' group' led by silverback Massa. By building the GorillaGarten, offering space for up to ten animals, the zoo wants to continue the good success achieved in breeding these endangered apes.
Chimpanzees and orang-utans are to receive outdoor facilities in addition to those of the gorillas in future as well.
